ASSISTANT PUBLIC HEALTH LAB DIRECTOR



The County of San Diego is currently accepting applications for Assistant Public Health Lab Director. The future incumbent for Assistant Public Health Lab Director will assist in managing public health laboratory personnel who perform laboratory activities for the purpose of identifying, controlling, and preventing disease in the community, as well as assist with the development and implementation of policy and procedures relating to the control and prevention of disease and other health threats.


REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

 

  1. A valid Public Health Microbiologist (PHM) certificate, issued by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), Laboratory Field Service (LFS), or a letter from CDPH LFS stating that applicant passed the PHM exam, or is eligible to take the PHM exam;AND,
  1. 2. A doctorate degree in microbiology, biological, physical, chemical or clinical laboratory science from an accredited institution, and be certified by a board approved by CDPH LFS such as the American Board of Bioanalysis (ABB), or the American Board of Medical Microbiology (ABMM) as required for a high complexity clinical laboratory director; or be eligible to sit for a board examination; OR,
  1. 3.  A doctor of medicine or doctor of osteopathy licensed in the State of California, or be eligible to become licensed in the State of California, and be certified in anatomic or clinical pathology, or both, by the American Board of Pathology or the American Osteopathic Board of Pathology or possess qualifications that are equivalent to those required by such certifications and be eligible to take those boards; OR,
  1. A doctor of medicine, a doctor of osteopathy or doctor of podiatric medicine licensed in the State of California, or be eligible to become licensed in the State of California to practice medicine, osteopathy or podiatry, with at least two years of laboratory training during medical residency, such as in hematology, or have at least two years of experience directing or supervising high complexity testing; OR,
  1. 5.  On or before February 28, 1992, experience serving as a Laboratory Director or could have qualified as a Laboratory Director under regulations at 42 CFR 493.1415, published March 14, 1990 at 55 FR 9538; OR,
  1. On or before February 28, 1992, be qualified under California State law to direct a public health laboratory; AND,
  1. At least three (3) years of experience in a public health microbiology laboratory including at least one (1) year of supervisory experience working directly under a laboratory director or assistant director, in a setting similar to the County of San Diego. At least (two) 2 years of the above experience must have been obtained within the last 5 years.


Note:
 With regard to #7 above, two (2) years of ABMM post-doctorate fellow experience from an approved doctoral program is considered qualifying. This experience may not substitute for the one (1) year of supervisory experience.

A doctorate degree in public health (DrPH) is highly desirable.
